Indonesia: “Singapore & Malaysia Are To Blame For Haze Too”

Indonesia: “Singapore & Malaysia Are To Blame For Haze Too”
The illegal clearing of forests by burning is a recurrent problem in Indonesia, particularly during the annual dry season that stretches from around June to September. This year, the haze came from forest and peat land fires in Bengkalis and Rokan Hilir Regencies.

The Bengkalis Disaster Mitigation Agency has said nearly 600 hectares of oil palm plantation and rubber plantation areas in three areas (Sepahat, Tanjung Leban, Bukit Kerikil) are currently burning. Firefighters from a number of plantation companies, including local residents, are making efforts to extinguish the fires. However, they are facing difficulties in controlling it because of water shortages and strong winds.

Haze Singapore

At least 138 hot spots are currently being monitored in Jambi, Riau, and South Sumatra – that is significantly up compared to less than 100 spots the week before.

However, an Indonesian official said Singapore and Malaysia share some of blame for the haze that has raised air pollution to “unhealthy” levels. The accusation was levelled at Singapore and Malaysian palm oil companies which he said also use the “slash and burn” method of clearing land.
Hadi Daryanto, who is the secretary-general of Indonesia’s Forestry Ministry, has been quoted in a newspaper as saying that the “slash and burn” technique being used is the cheapest land clearing method but it is not only used by local farmers.

Singapore Haze
He said that employees of palm oil investors, including those from Singapore and Malaysian companies, also use this method. Thus, he is asking also the Singapore and Malaysian companies to pay more attention to what is being done on the ground – their farmers using this illegal “slash and burn” technique.

Family Of Penang Bridge Ramp Collapse Victim To Sue

Family Of Penang Bridge Ramp Collapse Victim To Sue
The family of the Second Penang Bridge ramp collapse victim Tajudin Zainal Abidin plans to take legal action against project developer Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB) and contractor Cergas Murni Sdn Bhd.

Following an article in a local daily, where Sukarelawan Peguam (SukaGuam) chairman Datuk Khairul Anwar Rahmat urged the deceased’s family to act against JKSB and Cergas Murni for alleged negligence, the victim’s brother-in-law Saiful Ramli said, “We will file a suit against the project developer and the contractor as soon as possible. Our task now is to identify a suitable lawyer to represent us”.

When contacted yesterday, he said the victim’s family would consider filing the suit either in Penang or Kuala Lumpur, as JKSB’s headquarters was in Kuala Lumpur. Khairul Anwar said the RM10,000 initial compensation from JKSB was not justified to cover the loss of a life.

Tajudin Zainal Abidin

He added that the family members would be able to sue both parties for purported negligence after the interchange section collapsed on Thursday, which crushed Tajudin to death while he was driving below the 30m structure in a Perodua Kelisa.

Three others were also injured in the incident at Batu Maung.

The family is expected to take JKSB and Cergas Murni to court for being negligent at its Batu Maung Interchange project, which formed Package 3A of the 24km bridge.

Meanwhile, JKSB deputy manager (public relations and communications) Azizi Azizan, when contacted, declined to comment on the matter, except to say that the family had the right to seek legal redress. “Until such time as the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) completes its investigations, we are in no position to comment”, he told the New Straits Times.

When asked if any precautionary measures were being taken at the site of the incident, he said JKSB may consider requesting a road closure when it carried out future concrete-pouring works.

“Other safety measures will hinge on recommendations made by DOSH”, he said, adding that six remaining casting packages (3B-3G) at Batu Kawan on the mainland were yet to be completed.

Bloody Pics From Oscar Pistorius’ Home Leaked

Bloody Pics From Oscar Pistorius’ Home Leaked
Photographs purportedly showing the blood-spattered bathroom where Olympian Oscar Pistorius fatally shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp have emerged, apparently showing the scene of the killing for the first time.

The photos surfaced just days before the double amputee track star is due to appear in court, charged with murdering Steenkamp in his Pretoria home in the early hours of February 14. The images published by Sky News show a trail of blood leading from a bathroom; blood on the walls, stairs and a couch inside the house, and a Valentine’s Day card with “Ozzy” written on it – Steenkamp’s nickname for her sprinter boyfriend.

Oscar Pistorius Crime Scene Oscar-Pistorius-crime-scene-photos-emerge (2)

The photo of the bathroom shows a toilet covered in blood, a door with a missing panel and what appear to be two police-marked bullet holes below the level of the door’s handle. CNN has not been able to independently confirm the authenticity of the photos, and police spokesman Brigadiere Phuti Setati declined to comment on how Sky News obtained the pictures.

The runner says he thought there was an intruder in the house and, fearful of being attacked, ran on his stumps to the bathroom, where he shot through the door from a relatively low angle four times. It was only upon returning to his bedroom, Pistorius says, that he realized Steenkamp was not in bed and that she had been the one in the bathroom.

The state says it was premeditated murder — that Pistorius had an argument with Steenkamp then put on his prosthetic legs, walked to the bathroom, and shot through the door from a relatively higher angle, intentionally killing his girlfriend.

Police Arrest 7 Over Pastor Murder

Police Arrest 7 Over Pastor Murder
Malaysian police have arrested seven men over the murder of a US pastor who was found strangled with a mobile phone cord at his home in Kuala Lumpur, police said Thursday.

American pastor David James Ginter was found dead in his house on the outskirts of the Malaysian capital on 4th May by a neighbour. His hands and feet were bound, and the phone charger cable was wrapped around his neck.

Seven members of Ginter’s congregation, aged 20 to 30, have been taken into custody as part of the investigation into the murder, district police chief Amiruddin Jamaluddin said, adding police had yet to establish a motive. “We are still investigating”, Amiruddin told AFP.

The New Straits Times reported Ginter had several broken ribs and bruises and scratches on his body. His car was reported missing, but there were no signs of a struggle or forced entry into the house.

Ginter, 62, was a senior pastor at the Bridge International Church in Kuala Lumpur for three years.

More Bubble Tea Pearls Brands Recalled

More Bubble Tea Pearls Brands Recalled
Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) has recalled 11 food products from sale after traces of maleic acid were found to be present.

In a press statement on Sunday, AVA stated that they had conducted further tests on 66 food products from Taiwan after maleic acid was found in tapioca balls that are used in bubble tea drinks. Of the 66 food products AVA has tested thus far, maleic acid was found to be present in 11 products. Most of the affected products were tapioca starch balls used in the preparation of bubble tea beverages.
On 20th May, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration detected presence of maleic acid, an unapproved food additive in some food products, leading to the recall of Sunright brand tapioca balls in Singapore.

Bubble Tea Tapioca Pearls

AVA stated in their statement that they have informed the importers of the affected products to withdraw them from sale immediately, and that withdrawal has been completed. Consumers who have bought these products should either return them to the retailer or discard them and not consume them.

AVA is monitoring the situation closely and continues to survey products from Taiwan to ensure that they do not contain maleic acid.

Maleic acid is not an approved additive. It is also not an additive that is usually used in manufacturing food products. Long term consumption of high levels of maleic acid can cause kidney damage. However, occasional consumption at the levels detected does not pose any significant health risk.

The affected products are:
  1. “Hong” brand tapioca Starch, manufactured by Kai. & Co. Hong Foods Taiwan
  2. “Redman” brand black tapioca pearl, manufactured by Possmei International Co Ltd
  3. “Sunright” brand indica rice powder, manufactured by Sunright Foods Corporation

Sabah State Wants Rape Victim’s Marriage Nullified

Sabah State Wants Rape Victim’s Marriage Nullified
The Sabah Welfare Department is taking steps to take a 13-year-old alleged rape victim under its care and protection while trying to nullify her marriage to the man accused of having sex with her.
Announcing this, state Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad appealed to the prosecution to go ahead with the statutory rape charge against 40-year-old restaurant manager Riduan Masmud, who was charged on 28th February with statutory rape of the girl inside a car parked by the roadside.

Riduan Masmud

Jainab said she had directed her officers to take immediate action to obtain a court order to have the girl placed under the care and protection of the department under the Child Act 2001. She also cast doubts on the legality of the marriage between Riduan and the girl after checking with Syariah court officials:
The girl is young and cannot decide for herself. She needs counselling and we have to hear her side. She was 12 years and six months old when the alleged offence took place. A registrar told me there were two applications one from the man seeking consent to take a second wife, and another from the father of the girl seeking permission for his daughter to marry.
They told me the father’s application was allowed but there was no consent given for the man to take a second wife. Is it to hide the shame? Is it (the marriage) going to resolve the matter? This is very disturbing.
On a personal note, she said she was saddened that the father had allowed his daughter to marry Riduan, who has four children, aged two to 17 years.

The Sessions Court on Monday gave the prosecution until 6th June to decide on whether it wanted to proceed with rape charges against Riduan after the girl withdrew the rape report against him on 18th April.

Rapist Defends Marriage To 13-Year-Old Victim

Rapist Defends Marriage To 13-Year-Old Victim
On 28th February, 40-year-old Riduan Masmud was charged with raping a 13-year-old in a parked car. Not only is she underage, Riduan also happens to be a father – of four children, aged between two and 17. He further shocked the nation (after being charged) when he declared that he had married her as a second wife in the midst of the case. Hence, he saw no wrong with having sex with her.

Wait, what? Yes.

Riduan, a restaurant manager defended his action, saying it was a case of “suka sama suka” (mutual consent), adding that it was acceptable under Syariah law. “There are many cases of men marrying underage girls. I do not see why my case should be any different”, he said. As his rape case came up for mention at a Sessions Court yesterday, Riduan told reporters that he had known the girl for about six months and felt he had the right (to marry an underage girl).

It could not be ascertained whether the girl met Riduan while she was at school or whether she had been working for him. She is from a very poor family.

Riduan said he would let his child-wife finish her studies first and “maybe later take up a cosmetic course with my first wife”, adding that she was a make-up artist. His wife also told the press that she had accepted the teenager to be her husband’s second wife and promised to guide her through her studies.

Riduan Masmud Rape

On 7th May, DPP Ahmad Nazmeen Zulkifli told the court he had no objection for the case to be withdrawn after the girl withdrew the rape report against the man 18th April. It is understood that it was the girl’s aunt who lodged the police report after she found out about the “affair”.

All eyes were on the girl who appeared briefly in court. She has a childlike face, wore some make up, and tied up her long hair in a ponytail. Thin and looking under-developed, she was dressed in a T-shirt and jeans. The girl’s father, who was also at the court, said he accepted his daughter’s marriage to Riduan as they liked each other. “It is best for her that they get married. What else can I do?”, he added.

Counsel Loretto J. Padua informed the court that the Syariah marriage certificates had been presented to the investigating officer and confirmed that the two were now married.

Judge Ummu Khatom gave the Attorney-General’s Chambers until 6th June to make a decision on whether to proceed with the case. The court ordered that the man’s RM8,000 bail be extended till 6th June.

New Malaysian Home Minister Tells Unhappy Malaysians To Leave The Country

New Malaysian Home Minister Tells Unhappy Malaysians To Leave The Country

Newly-appointed Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Malaysians who are unhappy with the country’s political system should leave the country, stressing that loyal citizens should respect the rule of law.

In his first opinion piece entitled “Perhimpunan haram sebab tak terima hakikat gagal kuasai Putrajaya” (Illegal gathering because refuses to accept failure in controlling Putrajaya) printed in Utusan Malaysia, Ahmad Zahid wrote that the illegal gatherings held across the country by Pakatan Rakyat (PR) was a form of escapism and the denial of the fact that it failed to take control of Putrajaya.

The minister added that the opposition was overconfident with the support it received from voters:
Even if it is true that the opposition had claimed a greater majority, the measurement used by the opposition had been manipulated to follow the list system or the single transferable vote system.
Malaysia inherited the political system from the United Kingdom and many Commonwealth countries also use the first past the post system where political parties contesting in the election will only have one representative in each constituency with the principle of a simple majority of votes.
If these people wish to adopt the list system or the single transferable vote used by countires with the republic form of government, then they should migrate to these countries to practise their political beliefs. Malaysia is not a country to translate their political beliefs, even if they are really loyal to this country, they should accept the political system and the existing system to form a government as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
He went on to say that opposition leaders, especially those from PR and DAP, have been irresponsible in confusing young Chinese voters and their followers who are “politically blind” to dress in black to protest against the result of the 13th general election which they believe is for them due to the popular vote. He also added that PR must recognise and accept that the voters have rejected their rule in accordance to the first past the post system:
Illegal gatherings organised as roadshows are just an escapism by the opposition to run away from the fact that they have failed to capture Putrajaya. The opposition was actually over confident) with the support of the voters and manipulated the various issues with false promises in its manifesto that they know will not be able to implement.
People are getting fed up with the behaviour of a number of opposition leaders who are dragging in the young, especially those of Chinese descent, by fanning the flames of hatred and racism in a pluralistic society which has already fostered a sense of harmony.
The opposition is also questioning the authority of the Election Commission (EC) which had allegedly manipulated the votes. It is an outrageous accusation when the EC have observed most of their demands including the use of indelible ink that is only used by the third world countries.
And cue the pandemonium.

Murdered Pastor May Have Known Killer

Murdered Pastor May Have Known Killer
It has been a week but the whodunit question is still looming large in the murder of an American pastor, whom police believe might have known his killer. 61-year-old David James Ginter was found bound and murdered at his double-storey house in Taman Sri Ukay in Hulu Klang on 4th May 2013. His neighbour, who had a spare key, discovered the body when he was asked by Ginter’s wife to check on him.
Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Amiruddin Jamaluddin said that post-mortem results showed that Ginter haddied of asphyxiation due to gagging and neck compression. Police, he said, had been combing the area for new leads:
Initial investigations revealed that his wife last contacted him at 10pm on Friday. She tried calling him the next day but failed and asked the neighbour to check on him
There were no signs of struggle. His Toyota Avanza with the registration plate WRS 4390 is also missing. We are not ruling out robbery as the motive and that the victim might have known the killer. We have spoken to the neighbour, who discovered the body, but no arrests have been made so far.

He added that police had recorded statements from 20 people and advised the public not to speculate on the case and leave the matter to the police. David James Ginter’s wife, Sheryl had arrived in Malaysia from Australia following the tragedy.
Meanwhile, a memorial had been created online in memory of the pastor.

#WilliamYau Inquest: Fractures On Skull + Possible Causes Of Death

#WilliamYau Inquest: Fractures On Skull + Possible Causes Of Death
A pathologist revealed three possibilities which could have led to the death of six-year-old William Yau who went missing for about a week before his body was found floating in Sungai Klang early this year.
Dr Nur Ayutimasery Abdullah of Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Klang, said the post-mortem conducted on 25th January 2013 showed that the boy had fractures on his skull, which could have been caused by a strong force applied to his head. But she was unable to determine whether William had died because of drowning or the injuries sustained to the head:
In my view, there are three possibilities. First, a strong force could have been applied to his head and died. Second, he fell into a drain, drowned and died. The fractures on his skull occurred after his death. And third, he fell into a drain, knocked his head and died.
To confirm that he had drowned, there should be changes in his lungs, like it was bloated or there were a lot of tiny bubbles in his respiratory tract.
In this case, none of these were found as the body had decomposed.
When asked by deputy public prosecutor Lee Keng Fatt on the point of impact on William’s head, Dr Nur Ayutimasery said, “Possibly at the back of the head”.
Based on the post-mortem, William had died about a week before his body was found.
William Yau Jetty William Yau Inquest
Dr Nur Ayutimasery, who is the 12th witness in the coroner’s court conducting the inquest of William, said she had also found a healed fracture on the boy’s right rib as well as on the right shin bone. She said the fractures could have been occurred more than two weeks before the post-mortem.
She, however, ruled out the possibility that William had been abused because usually, an abused victim will have recurrent and multiple injuries. The doctor added that external examination of William’s body showed that there were scratch marks on his calf, which could have been caused by animals with paws like cats or dogs.

On whether there were blood stains on William’s clothes, Dr Nur Ayutimasery, who had conducted post-mortems on more than 600 cases, said she was unsure because the clothes were covered with mud.

#GE13: Through The Eyes Of Marina Mahathir

Marina Mahathir, daughter of Tun Mahathir Mohammad, otherwise known as a leader in many non-governmental organizations such as the Malaysian AIDS Foundation and an active socio-political blogger, has come out to share her thoughts and views on the 13th Malaysian general election. This is coming after the post effects of the GE13 e.g. silent protests, #black505 rally.

It’s a little lengthy but it’s worth spending a few minutes poring over. Perhaps it can give Malaysians an insight on how things have turned out post GE13 through the eyes of Marina:
For the last year, everything was put on suspended animation. First, because we did not know when the election would be; then, because we did not know what would happen afterwards. Now, we know and, in many ways, it was a very Malaysian result.
We gave every party just enough; not enough to make anybody ecstatic, but enough that they can console themselves that they did partly well. It may not be good enough for the people who want all or nothing, but the one thing about democracy is its unpredictability.
Perhaps there were a few heightened characteristics in the election campaign this time.
One is the incredible amount of advertising being thrown at voters from every possible direction. You couldn’t drive anywhere without seeing banners and posters, some of which should have been taken down for obstructing the view of drivers. You couldn’t even play games online without having to first endure a political video.
In the last days of campaigning, three human traits became obvious – fear, paranoia and mistrust.
All sides used fear to create paranoia and mistrust. Unfortunately, many allowed themselves to be used by politicians in that way. It made some Malaysians turn against other Malaysians, as well as foreigners. Tolerance, understanding and respect went out the window.
This is not the future that we expected, where all humans would enjoy equal rights. Instead, we fell to making distinctions between one human and another, based on suspicion and conjecture. We should really reflect on how easily this ugly side of us came out when provoked.
No doubt, we can blame various parties for creating an atmosphere in which this was possible. But we fell for it. In the name of democracy, we became undemocratic. But this is the day after, and we have to move on. Again, do we rely on our leaders of whatever stripe to lead us in moving on, or do we do it ourselves?
As the ever-cynical writer Gore Vidal said: “Democracy is supposed to give you the feeling of choice, like Painkiller X and Painkiller Y. But they’re both just aspirin.”
I feel that we will learn from this and we will focus on the next election, where we will insist that all sides have to earn our trust and, therefore, our votes. I don’t think we will succumb to manipulation any more.
I also think that the most crucial reform needed is in the media. It truly needs to redeem itself from its outrageous behaviour during the campaign, dispensing with any semblance of objectivity or balance. We need to demand from the media an account of how much it thinks it contributes to national unity and healing. The people voted out the worst proponents of disunity and the media should take heed of that.
I would really advise the Prime Minister to stop thinking of Cabinet posts as a form of reward but, rather, as assigning tasks of huge responsibility. For that, he should not choose the same old faces. To really show that he is sincere about change, his criteria for his ministers should be talent, youth and gender, three things that were wholly absent before.
Only then will we believe this is a fresh new beginning.

#GE13: More than 100,000 Turned Up For #Black505

Yesterday, from as early as 4pm, Malaysians gathered at the Kelana Jaya stadium in Petaling Jaya to support a post-election rally (also known as the “Suara Rakyat Suara Keramat” rally or #black505“) led by PKR de facto leader Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim. He was to address his supporters for the first time since the 5th May 2013 (Sunday) 13th Malaysian general election aka #GE13.
Despite the rain, what seemed like more than 100,000 Malaysians braved the complete standstill jam on the LDP heading towards Kelana Jaya to make their way to the stadium.

Some of the participants parked their cars at the side of the main road and walked a few kilometres to the Kelana Jaya stadium. We hear that even nearby shopping mall, Paradigm Mall, was swarmed with enthusiastic Malaysians.
The Malaysians who turned up donned black T-shirts to symbolise protest against what they allege as “electoral fraud” and others brought yellow flowers, symbolising “Bersih”, or clean and fair elections:

Amongst the leaders who were present are such as the newly-elected MP for Kelana Jaya, Wong Chen, as well as Tian Chua, PKR vice president Nurul IzzahElizabeth Wong, Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang, Selangor MB Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, and more.
Both Anwar Ibrahim and Lim Kit Siang were spotted riding pillion on motorbikes in the effort to beat the tragic jam so that they could make it to the Kelana Jaya stadium on time. The sight of the leaders on motorbikes shocked onlookers but Anwar Ibrahim graciously waved at them as they whipped out their smartphones and cameras to snap away:

As for the environment at the stadium throughout the entire time of the rally, our sources have told us that it was “electric”. Malaysians, regardless of race, age, gender, background, stood steadfast for their home.
Phone lines were jammed, Twitter was abuzz, and as expected, “#black505″ and “Kelana Jaya” was trending:

When Lim Kit Siang finally took the stage, he began by thanking all Malaysians for their commitment towards making the country and people stronger and states that now is the time to “turn our resolve into the tasks that can move our country forward”. He also went on to say:

Foremost is the need to properly account for all of the irregularities during an election that was not only the dirtiest election in our country’s history, but also the most marred in its process. We support Bersih’s people’s tribunal as an essential step for justice and transparency. We call on all Malaysians to come forward to share their experiences and help us get to the truth.
In our initial assessment, we can point to multiple seats where serious irregularities occurred – Labis, Tapah, Segamat and Bentong, to name just a few. We believe that the irregularities are extensive and nation-wide and minimally affect up to 30 seats. As the irregularities impact more than 21 seats, the margin for which we would have won government, and involve at least two state governments – Perak and Terengganu.
The DAP, working in collaboration with our partners in Pakatan Rakyat, will work to gather and present the evidence. If Malaysia had free and fair elections, we would be in Putrajaya and many other state capitals across the country. Malaysians know this, and the BN knows it.
